Is Villa Borghese free?
What costs nothing
- Walking into the park, from any side, on any day.
- The Pincio terrace at the western edge, over Piazza del Popolo.
- The boating lake and the little neoclassical temple on its island.
- The avenues of umbrella pines, the lawns, the benches, the whole 80 hectares.
What does not
The Galleria Borghese charges €16, plus a €2 obligatory reservation fee, so €18 all-in. The Bioparco and the Cinema dei Piccoli are separate attractions with separate admission. Everything sold on this site is a Galleria product except the golf-cart tour, which covers the gardens you could walk for free — a distinction I explain in full on villa versus galleria.
"Free entry" and the reservation trap
Under-18s do not pay for a Galleria ticket. They still need the €2 reservation fee and, more importantly, they still need a reserved slot. The same holds on the state museums’ free Sunday. Free admission removes the ticket price and nothing else — see free Sundays.
If someone in your group is entitled to free entry, book their slot at the same moment you book yours. A party of four with three reservations is a party of three at the door.
If you decided you do want the museum
Timed entry with an optional audio guide, €35 — more than the €18 the museum charges directly, and worth knowing that before you click.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free to walk around Villa Borghese?
Yes. The park is public, free and open dawn to dusk, with no ticket and no gate. Only the attractions standing inside it charge — the museum among them. The park-versus-museum difference is the thing worth reading first.
Do children get into the Galleria Borghese free?
Under-18s pay nothing for the ticket, but the €2 reservation fee and the reservation itself still apply to them. Book their slot alongside yours — see booking ahead.
Is there a free day at the Galleria Borghese?
Italian state museums run a free-admission first Sunday of the month. The reservation stays compulsory and those slots go fastest of all — the detail is on free Sundays.
